On July 1, 1999, nurses from over 90 countries sat in Westminster Abbey in London, side by side with colleagues from Australia to Zambia, to celebrate what happened in 1899 in London when an international gathering of nurses united. The bells that have echoed from those solid towering pillars to mark significant events for nearly a thousand years rang to celebrate the centenary of the International Council of Nurses (ICN) and the establishment of modern nursing. Nurses attending that service may not have known each others' names, but none were strangers.
