Catlin's article describes the results of a naturalistic inquiry into the opinions of physicians who resuscitate extremely low birth weight (ELBW) neonates. Factors such as role expectation, awareness, internal and external forces, burden, and continuing quandaries are discussed, but the theme of “uncertainty” seems to carry considerable weight in the author's conclusion that there is a need to “delineate ethical criteria for resuscitation.”
