Summary. Processes for validation and coding of the taxonomy for the Nursing Interventions Classification (NIC) are described. A sample of nurses expert in theory development rated the NIC taxonomy using five criteria. Following identification of a stable structure, the taxonomy was coded with each intervention receiving a unique number. A coded and valid taxonomic structure facilitates use of the classification in computerization and makes possible the collection of comparable data. A coded classification can also be used in reimbursement systems.
