This paper presents an expanded understanding of both burden and moral development, identifying the traits of burden as being essential components of moral development. Steps in the interpretation of burden are shown to result in caregiver decisions that may be life‐giving, oppressive, or a combination of both. This new understanding of burden is then related to Folkman and Lazarus's (1985) theory of stress and coping.
