This paper examines collaboration in the preparation of a research program grant proposal. A five‐stage process is described. Major perceived benefits of collaboration include the following: (a) the strengths of multiple investigators can be focused on a single research problem; (b) planning a large research effort becomes manageable; and (c) cooperating scientists learn from each other, which fosters professional growth.
