Ambiguity was found to be the most prevalent experience in a group of infertile women. The women's descriptions of ambiguity, expressed as uncertainty about the causes and cures of infertility, pregnancy diagnosis and outcome, life pursuits and control, and identity are presented and compared with the literature on ambiguity and disease or disability. Questions are raised for clinicians and researchers.
