The important issue of the cognitive level of the professional nurse is often ignored when nurses debate appropriate credentials and job descriptions for entry into professional practice. This article summarizes what is known about the development of the cognitive reasoning skills in young adults, presents data gathered from student nurse populations indicating that students' level of cognitive development is relatively low, and discusses the implications for the profession.
