In 1978 the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation appropriated almost $5 million to support primary care demonstration projects in 69 schools located in four states—Colorado, New York, North Dakota and Utah. It was by far the largest national effort ever undertaken to implement and assess the feasibility and utility of providing comprehensive health services in school settings, with nurse‐practitioners as head of the team. This paper summarizes the findings of the evaluation of this national effort.
