A steadily increasing number of requests to participate in mailed questionnaire surveys was the impetus for an investigation of what nursing research texts say about this methodology as well as what the communications field has discovered about it. The body of knowledge about nursing education will not be expanded through reliance on the data collected by this spurious methodology.
