Frequency and regularity of visitation is studied over time for a sample of recently separated mother‐custody families. Results suggest that stability of visitation is more predictive of child adjustment than frequency of visits and that these effects are manifested over time. Setting up and maintaining a visitation schedule are shown to be related to the relationship that parents establish with each other in the first year of the separation.
