Models are methods of interpreting data. They vary in their suitability to the topic being studied. Models of the family can be divided into those that address questions about the emergent characteristics of the group and those that address questions about the attributes and interactions of individual members. In this paper, these assumptions provide a framework for judging Bogdan's criticism of homeostatic theory and his contention that an adequate description of family process must begin with individuals and their cognitive states.
