The purpose of this paper is to suggest that it is possible, but probably undesirable, to bring order to the frequently noted chaotic state of theory within the field of family therapy. The basic assumption is that the field of family therapy can be viewed as a system. Methods familiar to family therapists are used: description and analysis of the problem, history, theory development, introduction of an organizing principle, and consideration of the consequences of problem resolution. The paper is in the form of a case presentation.
