A conceptual model of some of the intrapsychic and interpersonal forces that stimulate and maintain repetitive, nonproductive marital conflict behavior is presented. In this model, concepts derived from psychoanalytic and social‐learning theory are integrated within a family systems framework. Implications for conjoint therapy with conflictual couples are discussed.
