Changes in Secondary School Geography in the Federal Republic of Germany

Considerable changes took place in German secondary school geography during the 1970s. A largely descriptive and encyclopaedic approach came to be replaced by one characterized by its systematic attention to significant global themes and to a more rigorous methodology. Changes were influenced by the growing strength of German social geography, by developments in German educational theory, and by a growing interest in advances in Anglo‐American school geography. The role of three instruments of curriculum change is described ‐ the formal revision of the official syllabus, the textbook series, and the curriculum project ‐ and the links between them are traced. De grands changements ont affecté l'enseignement de la geographie dans les écoles secondaires allemandes dans les années 1970. Une approche mettant I'accent sur des themes à la fois prtcis et globaux, et sur une méthodologie plus rigoureuse a remplacé une approche essentiellement descriptive et encyclopédique. Ces changements sont liés au renforcement de la géographie sociale allemande, aux développements invervenus dans la thkorie pidagogique allemande, et à l'intérêt portk, dans ce pays, aux progres de l'enseignement de la géographie dans le monde anglo‐amkricain. On y décrit le rôle joué par trois facteurs dans le changement des programmes: leur rkvision formelle, l'influence des ouvrages scolaires recommandés, et le produit fini issu de recherches approfondies. On y analyse aussi les relations entre ces trois pôles.
