Summary The city of St. John's has been analysed systematically from a commercial viewpoint. Mapping of commercial establishments was carried out to achieve distributional patterns of individual types. The maps permitted the determination of business location relative to population distribution. This enabled a further evaluation of the effectiveness of specific retail distributions in serving the people. The numbers and types of stores were compared with those in other Canadian cities with the aim of discovering any peculiarities in St. John's. The comparison revealed business opportunities in the case of certain retail types and overcrowding in others. Finally, the degree of concentration of commercial establishments was determined and a regionalization of commercial areas was achieved.
