This review summarizes our experience with transesophageal echocardiography in 92 pediatric patients in order to delineate the capabilities and limitations of this new technique. Transesophageal echocardiography was found to be a valuable clinical tool in intraoperative analysis and in the small subpopulation of pediatric patients with limited precordial echocardiography. Further refinements in transducer design are required to allow complete analysis of congenital cardiac anomalies.
