An automatic impUntablc cardioverter defibrillator {AICD) was implanted in 40 patients (pts) with ventricular tachycardia or aborted sudden death (ASD). Indications for AICD use included amiodarone (Amio) failure {N=10) and Amio toxicity (N=16). Each AICD pi was matched lo 2 coniiols (C) for similar Amio experience and usage, age, ejection fraction (EF), heart disea.^c and arrhythmia. Amio was given to 34 pis before AICD and 17 after. Both groups had similar EF (31 ±11.5, mean±SD), age (59±13yr) and proportion with ischemic heart disease (75%). In the first 25 mo there were no AICD sudden deaths and 4 in the C group. There have been a total of iO and 20 deaths in the AICD and C groups respectively. The cumulative probability of survival is shown:
