Pupils in five classrooms of the Champaign (Illinois) public elementary schools were involved in the study for a period of three years. Four of these classroom groups began studying Spanish in the fall of 1959 when they were just beginning the fourth grade and continued until they had completed the sixth grade. Two classrooms were taught by specialist teachers of Spanish using procedures, materials, and equipment suitable in situations in which a teacher is
