There is ample evidence to support the statement that a speaking knowledge of a foreign language is becoming increasingly useful in nearly all occupations and professions …. Foreign language study extends the horizon and fosters desirable attitudes toward other peoples—an outcome which is highly important in our world today. “To gain the popularity it deserves, language study must in my judgment be made more functional. From the elementary school through the college I believe the spoken language should be emphasized, and the many modern teaching methods and devices that have been so successfully employed put to maximum use.”
