Author's Summary— Translation is not one of the great arts, yet it requires, particularly in the translation of verse, thorough knowledge of language, with true appreciation of the beautiful, and some ability in the use of words. Classical verse is incapable of mechanically accurate reproduction in our modern tongue. The same is true, but in lesser degree, of verse in the modern foreign languages. Examples are offered in illustration of these statements.
