Author's summary.— The extreme difficulty inherent in the ambitious attempt to become bilingual is clearly revealed in the casual inability of even cultured German‐Americans to acquire idiomatic control of the English “progressive” present tense: e.g., “This is good coffee; I am liking it”, for “I like it.”
