Author's summary.— Many of the cardinal principles of the New Religious Humanism are found expressed in the works of Benito Pérez Galdós years before the advent of the new movement. The insistence on the value of the individual personality, the belief in the perfectibility of human personality, and many other humanistic principles are advocated by Galdós, though the great novelist would not agree entirely with all the beliefs of the Religious Humanists.
