What commonalities appear among the richly diverse set of articles we present? What conclusions about the interface between personal life and social issues can be drawn from the theories and research findings contained in this issue? Some of the authors represented here (e.g., Elms; Stewart & Healy) have presented evidence for a social‐personal link, while others (e.g., Crosby & Herek; Tyler & McGraw) have demonstrated a discontinuity between the social and the personal. How can the different types of finding be reconciled? Without obscuring the differences (or, indeed, the disagreements) among the various authors, we find some points of convergence, which we believe hold lessons for our understanding of the connections between personal life and social issues.
