Human capital theory (Becker, 1964, 1965) is introduced and defined for the non‐economist. Two empirical studies that attempt to explain female life style choices using assumptions and hypotheses derived from human capital theory are discussed. Future research concerning the impact of investment in human capital on female earnings patterns is suggested.
