This paper reviews previous research on differences between elderly persons residing in urban and rural locations. While the urban elderly have demonstrable advantages in terms of many “objective” indicators of quality of life, they appear to have no corresponding advantage in terms of subjective or emotional well‐being, and perhaps even show a small disadvantage on such dimensions. The paper begins by documenting these differences, then considers some ways in which this paradox might be explained by examining some possible advantages of rural residence for the elderly.
