Three strategies to make models of adolescent parenthood more realistic and more relevant to social policy are presented:1 Behavioral hypotheses linking early parenthood to presumed causes and later consequences should reflect a “continuous adjustment” perspective on the young adult life course rather than the prevailing “fixed‐order equilibrium” perspective. 2 Variables used to measure the timing of first childbearing should differentiate among distinct actions and circumstances that lead to the initial childbearing. 3 Constraints and incentives (especially those subject to policy influence) present in the immediate environments of young adults and potentially affecting the transition to parenthood should be explicitly represented in models.
