This letter to the editor refers to an article by Brannigan et al. regarding their comments on the use of statistical significance testing in toxic torts. The author of the letter wishes to clarify a term used in the Brannigan paper. The authors state (Brannigan et al.) Relative risk' is defined to be the probability that a given injury was caused by the exposure. The author of this letter corrects the Brannigan statement: The true unknown relative risk is the risk of injury in the exposed relative to that in the unexposed -- a quantity that may only be estimated from epidemiologic studies using either the ratio of disease rates in exposed versus unexposed populations or using the odds ratio. 3 refs.
