This manuscript describes a biochemistry experiment for pharmacy students that uses a student‐centered approach. The students are given little or no practical information and asked to compare two protein analysis methods — the Biuret and the Bradford methods. The experiment introduces students to several important concepts including the influence of amino acid composition on protein analysis, the quantitative use of a spectrophotometer, and how to select an analytical method. From the response of students to the generated or proposed questions, it is possible to conclude that only about 50% of the students did participate actively in the process of acquiring knowledge. © 2001 IUBMB.
