Granulocytes isolated from fresh blood and stored in autologous plasma at 4 C remained in suspension longer than did granulocytes stored in a balanced salt solution. Acid‐citrate‐dextrose plasma was more effective in maintaining the granulocytes in suspension than was heparin. The function of granulocytes stored at 4 C in acidcitrate‐dextrose plasma declined markedly with storage for one week. During the first 24 hours of storage there was only a minimal loss of function. These observations suggest that granulocyte suspensions may be useful for therapeutic transfusion for up to 24 hours of storage in acidcitrate‐dextrose plasma.
