A convenient computerized method for recording daily patient hematologic parameters and response to blood component administration is in use at the Baltimore Cancer Research Center. The system utilizes two input documents; on one form daily blood counts are typed with machine‐readable characters. The second form records details of blood component infusion and recipient response to transfusion. The patient identification and date are typewritten on the second form; all oher information is entered by blackening selected preprinted squares (“mark‐sense”) corresponding to numerical or descriptive information. Optical character recognition equipment scans both input documents to provide data to the computer. A weekly summary is prepared with a high‐speed line printer. Cumulative files of these weekly reports allow rapid evaluation of patient hematologic status in relation to chemotherapeutic treatment of disease and response to transfusion. All data are stored on magnetic tape to allow easy retrospective access to specific information related to both routine and investigational types of blood component therapy.
