This paper presents a computerized method for determining and maintaining a rational system of costs and charges for individual tests in a hospital laboratory blood bank. The program is designed to accommodate readily to change and to provide for ease of correction by the user. It permits a fair distribution of charges for tests relative to costs and provides a powerful tool for laboratory management. The principles involved and much of the computer programming are readily applicable to other units of the hospital laboratory. Indeed, this approach to laboratory management should not stand in isolation, but should be best implemented as part of an overall revision of all charges within the hospital.
