An in vitro study was made to evaluate the effects of three different infusion sets [HB 182 (Fenwal); Abbott 4594 (Metal filter); and HE 792 (Fenwal)] on the recovery of platelets. The results indicate that platelets are not lost during the filtration process. Platelet recoveries were approximately the same with all three filters under study. The volume of platelet concentrates varies significantly. The loss of platelets in infusion sets and plastic bags is relatively large if small volume concentrates are used.
