Some erythrocyte characteristics following refrigerated storage in ACD‐A for three weeks Were studied to determine the possible influence of sex, race, age, and ABO type. Analyses were made of both 24‐hour and 50 per cent survival, in vivo , spontaneous hemolysis in vitro , plasma potassium, and whole blood pH. The “positive” findings were: (1) plasma potassium levels were lower in women than in men, (2) 24‐hour survival in Negro men was better than in Caucasian men, (3) an apparent association of type B cells with degree of hemolysis, and (4) an association of sex, race, and ABO type, either singly or in various combinations, on the range of hemolysis. Although the findings do not affect the acceptability of a given blood donor materially, it is suggested that sex, race, and ABO type should be considered in designing experimental groups for the evaluation of blood preservative solutions and the quality control of plastic blood‐collecting systems.
