This article describes a computerized inventory control system for controlling blood distribution between the blood bank and its client hospitals. The system has been operative since October 1964, and has excelled the blood utilization efficiency of previous procedures. Significantly, appropriately processed information of daily blood status by a centralized computer has led to a 60 per cent reduction in outdating together with an inventory reduction at the blood bank averaging 30 per cent. Incorporation of the new system into current hospital and blood bank management is evaluated in terms of psychological, labor, and economic implications.
