Anti‐M, anti‐N, anti‐S, anti‐Fy a and anti‐Fy b typing reagents can be prepared from raw sera by absorption with any ficin‐treated cells of the appropriate ABO group since the action of the enzyme destroys M, N, S, Fy a and Fy b antigens. As well as the advantage that cells need not be selected beyond their ABO group the enhancing action of the use of the enzyme in absorption procedures means that the number of absorptions can usually be reduced. Since ficin does not destroy the s or U antigens the modification cannot be used to prepare anti‐s or anti‐U typing reagents.
