Platelet transfusions are used with increased frequency in the medical or surgical management of patients with hematological and neoplastic disorders. The safety and value of such transfusions were demonstrated in aplastic anemia, thrombocytopenias of congenital, auto‐immune or infectious origin, massive transfusion syndrome, Thai hemorrhagic fever, leukomas and generalized neoplasias with thrombocytopenia. Intensive chemotherapy or ionizing radiation can be given beyond the limitations imposed by depressed thrombocytogenesis when platelet transfusions are available. The procurement and administration of platelets on a routine basis have modified the operation and the role of blood banks and transfusion services in centers of investigative hematology and cancer chemotherapy. These services are becoming an essential facility for advancing the management of the above disorders.
