As the socio‐economics of blood banking is of great interest, a survey was made to determine the processing and blood replacement fees charged by hospital, community and miscellaneous blood banks. Information furnished by 354 AABB institutional members was analyzed, and weighted mean processing and replacement fees were determined using blood usage as a common base. The replacement policies of the reporting banks also were reviewed. The author concludes there is no great variance in the fees charged or in blood replacement policies reported by banks in all five AABB districts; but that there is a need for blood banks to adopt more standardized terminology as related to blood transfusion charges.
