Most blood banks operate on the principle that blood provided for transfusions should be replaced on a voluntary basis by members of the patient's family, friends or by community response. Banks also recognize that the outdating of whole blood should be kept to a minimum. The National Clearinghouse Program of the American Association of Blood Banks was established to enable the exchange of donor replacement credits between banks throughout the country and to facilitate the borrowing and lending of blood to alleviate unavoidable shortages and surplus.
