The first sessions were devoted to assay metho d s , standardization, purification and chemical characterization of erythropoietin. Establishment of a standard, admittedly crude at present, was urged. Standard “A” is available on request to the Study Section and it is hoped that researchers in this field will use their own materials for preparing secondary standards. The most highly purified material described represents 150,000 times concentration of the activity of the original sheep plasma but the goal of a pure substance is not yet at hand. Erythropoietin may be an alphal or alpha, glycoprotein which contains approximately 29 per cent carbohydrate, 17 per cent hexosamine, 13 per cent sialic acid. Molecular weight predictions seem premature.
