Open heart surgeries are increasing in our metropolitan area. The provision of adequate amounts of blood for these cases is a challenge to our blood bank. Operations of this type for which our blood bank supplied blood numbered ten in 1956, 333 in 1960 and are currently occurring at a rate of 15 cases a week. Most of the blood for these patients is obtained from non‐paid donors recruited by the blood bank. Our blood bank checks the patient's ABO and Rh type, screens the donor sera for antibodies, and performs a crossmatch between the blood of the patient and each donor. These services are provided at our regular processing fee and donor replacement policy without added cost to the patient.
