A bstract The important role of belief in economic theorizing, ideology formation, and individual behavior is examined. Its role in the making of unrealistic assumptions in economic theory is considered. The extent to which this derives from ideological predispositions and the relationship of ideology to theology is analyzed. The role of selfilling prophecies is examined as an example of belief driving economic action.
