A bstract . The connection between the ideas of the Saint‐Simonians and the spectacular growth and development of investment banking in mid‐19th century Europe is documented. Some of the economic ideas of the Saint‐Simonians are outlined, and it is shown that they looked forward to a worldwide economic association managed by a mammoth bank. The investigation then focuses on the economic activity of two prominent Saint‐Simonians— Emile and Isaac Pereire. The economic activities of the Pereires are traced from their entrepreneurial interest in railroads to the founding of the Credit Mobilier , activities which had a measurable influence on the economic development of Europe.
