DURING 1975–1978, 853 dogs and cats were presented to the New York State College of Veterinary Medicine (NYSCVM) at Cornell University for elective ovariohysterectomy (OVH). These cases did not include any surgery performed for pathologic reasons (such as pyometra or uterine injury). All the procedures were performed by fourth‐year veterinary students under the direct supervision of attending interns or residents.
