The literature relating to hepatic disease following halothane anesthesia is reviewed. Evidence in support of a direct hepatotoxic effect by halothane is lacking, but the rare occurrence of a hypersensitivity reaction after repeated halothane exposure is well documented. This information is of significance for veterinarians repeatedly exposed to trace amounts of halothane.
