Twelve dogs and one cat were operated to close a ventricular septal defect. The method of patient selection, associated lesions, techniques used to correct the defect and significance to the total population of small animals with congenital lesions is discussed. Ten of 13 animals survived surgery. When indicated, this procedure can be safely performed to correct ventricular septal defect.
