Summary Surgical removal of chip fractures of metacarpophalangeal joints arising from the cranial proximal margin of the first phalanx has been practiced for many years. Calcification developing within the joint capsule in the surgical area was observed frequently and was a cause for concern. Procedures to eliminate this problem were unsuccessful. A conservative program of rest and appropriate treatment for degenerative arthrosis until the lesion has healed has resulted in these horses becoming racing sound without having to resort to surgery.
