The peritoneum is a large serous membrane which is comparable to the skin in overall surface area. Inflammation of this organ (peritonitis) may be caused by infectious organisms or by noninfectious entities. The omentum (a part of the peritoneum) has the ability to “wall off” infectious processes which may in turn, result in localized peritonitis. Peritonitis may also be present in the acute or chronic generalized form.
