SUMMARY Osteomyelitis is bone infection which may be present in both the acute and chronic forms and may result from direct contamination of the bone or from the hematogenous spreading. The diagnosis of osteomyelitis should be based on clinical signs, radiographic studies, and culture of the causative organism. The treatment of osteomyelitis depends on the extent and duration of the disease and involves the use of: (1) proper supportive care, (2) appropriate surgical principles, and (3) selection of systemic antibiotics determined by bacterial culture and antibiotic susceptibility testing. The closed irrigation‐suction technique may be of positive benefit in selected cases of chronic bacterial osteomyelitis.
