John Wilkin. Coastal ocean modeling of nonlinear internal-wave physical and acoustic effects. WHOI $144,000 Ben Horton. Heterogenous rupture of great Cascadia earthquakes inferred from coastal subsidence estimates. NSF $129,503 Oscar Schofield. Climate driven impacts on marine ecology, biogeochemistry and carbon cycles of the WAP. WHOI $70,468 Rutgers Oceanography Rutgers becoming central to the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) which is constructing a network of ocean sensor systems that measure the physical, chemical, geological and biological variables in the ocean and seafloor for decades to come. Knowledge of these variables is vital for improved detection and forecasting of environmental changes and their effects on biodiversity, coastal ecosystems and climate. The OOI is funded by the National science Foundation through its facilities construction account and represents one of the largest single oceanographic investments in the agencies history. The OOI will be collecting data at us coastal locations along the Pacific northwest and Atlantic northeast , regional cable networks reaching deep sea hydrothermal vents, and global arrays deployed both in the north and south of the Atlantic and Pacifc. These distributed systems will be linked through a robust cyber-infrastructure. Rutgers Coastal Ocean Observation Lab and the Rutgers Discovery Informatics Institute have been approached to develop and maintain cyber infrastructure over the projected 20-year lifetime of the project. Team members on this effort include Raytheon and Applied science Associates. This high visibility effort will make Rutgers one of the central portals for the global community to access ocean data. Diving along coral in the Banda Sea. Rutgers has a growing presence in Indoensia.
