Three compliance‐improving strategies were tested in an ambulatory geriatric population, and the results were compared with those in a control group. The strategies included standardized instructions with tapes and transcripts, color‐coded pill bottles, and color‐coded pill bottles matched to a color‐coded weekly pill tray. Only in the color‐coded bottles‐tray group were the results significantly better ( P < 0.001) than in the controls; on the average, the scores deviated only 1.7 per cent from the ideal pill count compared with 17.1 per cent for the control group.
